Moving Beyond the Basics: Advanced Diagnostics for the CS5 When standard troubleshooting isn't enough, professional service technicians need exact electrical metrics, pinout data, and error code breakdowns to diagnose and repair the Tennant CS5 efficiently.
1. Master Error Code & LED Diagnostic Key When the CS5 touch panel flags a fault, use this guide to identify the exact electrical subsystem failure:
Red Brush LED (Quick Flashing – 250ms ON/OFF): Indicates a brush motor overcurrent or direct short circuit. Press the touch button to clear after fixing.
Red Brush LED (Double Quick Flashing – 100ms ON/OFF/ON, 450ms OFF): Indicates an overcurrent or short circuit in the H2O solution pump.
Red Vacuum Motor LED (Fast Flashing) + Red Brush LED (Simultaneous): Generic or motor-specific overcurrent/short circuit on the vacuum system.
Buzzer Sounds on Paddle Press: The tilt sensor or power board accelerometer detects an improper machine stance. Ensure the machine is completely flat and horizontal to clear.
All Battery LEDs Flash Simultaneously: Total communication loss between the power board and touch panel board. Inspect the internal 4-pin data cable; if wiring is sound, replace the power board.
2. Component Current Draw & Voltage Benchmarks Always test components on flat, dry flooring using a clamp-on ammeter with a 100A full-scale range. The machine runs on a base system voltage of 36V (± 1V).
Brush Motor (36V DC, 100W): Clamp onto the red motor wire.
No-load draw (brush detached): 0.05 A to 0.10 A. If higher, pull the motor housing cap to inspect the carbon brushes. They must be replaced if worn below 9 mm (0.35 in). When reassembling, torque motor cap self-locking nuts to a maximum of 5.5 Nm / 48.68 lbf in.
Working load draw (standard medium brush operating): 0.18 A to 0.30 A.
Suction Motor (36V DC, 160W): Clamp onto one of the white power wires.
No-load draw: Stabilizes between 0.14 A and 0.62 A. Because this is a sealed, maintenance-free centrifugal unit with stainless steel bearings, out-of-spec current draws require a complete motor replacement.
3. Solution Pump Bench Testing & Fuse Ratings
The Pump: The solution pump is a 24 VAC vibration pump. To test electrical functionality on the bench, use an independent 12V to 24V DC battery source. Repeatedly tapping a test lead to the contact should yield a clean "CLICK" sound, verifying coil integrity. If no click is heard, replace the pump.
On-Board Fuses: Located directly on the power board under the protective electronics cover. Always check these first during power failure diagnostics:
F1 (Brush Motor): 6.3A - Slow-blow (T).
F3 (Suction Motor): 5A - Fast-blow (F).
F2 (Water Pump & Boards): 2A - Fast-blow (F).
4. Battery & Charger Practices: Good, Better, Best
Good: Verify battery health using a multimeter. A healthy fully-charged pack should read precisely 36V. If runtime is severely degraded despite a green indicator, check the charger output or replace the pack.
Better: Utilize the built-in firmware diagnostic mode to pull exact board versions. Press and hold the ECO and H2O touch buttons simultaneously for 4 seconds until the buzzer sounds; the battery LEDs will flash sequences representing Major (M), Minor tens (D), and Minor units (U) for both the touch and power boards.
Best: When replacing electronic components or wiring harnesses, strictly adhere to the wiring schematic layout. Ensure all power board fast-on terminals (coded with distinct sizing for positive/negative lines on the brush and power inputs) are firmly seated to prevent high-resistance micro-arcing.
Whether you need replacement squeegee blades, brush motors, filters, or battery care supplies, keeping OEM-spec parts on hand ensures minimal downtime. Contact our service team or explore our catalog for exact-fit replacement parts for the Tennant CS5
